My hard drive shows an error when pasting something on the dvd?

when i put a blank dvd in my hard drive, it auto plays the dvd, but when i look at its properties, it shows the used and free space as zero(0), though the disc is not full. but when i put a full dvd, it plays and when i copy and paste any thing onto the dvd, it shows an error. and when i put a cd, it plays whether blank or full. please tell a solution.
