Why did my doc give me iron pills?

At my first prenatal visit my doc prescribed me prenatal vitamins and iron pills, but my iron was fine. I've never had any problems with my iron. Can you get sick if you take iron pills when u dnt need them....?? I'm a little on the fence abt taking them them when I dnt need them...
